How an EAP can work effectively with a union population

Our union has worked really hard to secure strong benefits and service vendors, so I don’t always support making changes to them. When our employer decided to outsource our EAP to Empathia, we weren’t very happy. We didn’t make it so easy on them initially, but they stuck with us and never gave up. They focused on building a relationship with our union and spent a lot of time listening. We’ve worked together for a long time now and have even co-presented with them at a national labor conference.
…..we understood that the success of the program was dependent on cultivating a positive and effective partnership with the union. To improve the union’s perception of the program, we suggested a fresh start. It began with a new account manager, which led the union to begin hosting weekly teleconferences with Empathia and the UAW union representatives. Communication opened up, trust was established and the relationship began to improve.
Ultimately, we were invited to co-present with the UAW union on mental health topics and the benefits of a joint management-labor-external EAP partnership at local, regional and national labor conferences.
