Our Backstory

Empathia has been helping organizations and individuals be their best for over 35 years.  We began in 1982 as an internal EAP for a regional medical center and by 1985 became a fast-growing regional and national vendor.

Today, we provide global, highly customized, and successful behavioral health and crisis management programs for some of the most recognizable companies in the world.

Philip joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 1987 as the Director of Clinical Services, becoming its President/CEO in 1993. In addition to his duties at Empathia, he is an award-winning newspaper columnist, author of three books, and numerous journal and magazine articles. Philip is a sought-after speaker, has been a guest expert on ABC Television’s 20/20, and has presented at the Brookings Institution, among many other venues. Prior to joining Empathia, he taught behavioral sciences at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, where he received an Outstanding Faculty Award. His approach to work/life balance includes competitive sailing on the Great Lakes, wilderness backpacking, and nature photography.

Carol joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 1990. As Senior Vice President, Customer Relations and Chief Operations Officer, she oversees all service operations at Empathia. Additionally, Carol is an experienced corporate trainer and consultant who has worked with a number of high profile corporate entities. She holds a Masters in Social Work; she is also an Associate Certified Coach, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), and a member of the International Coach Federation.

Carol joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 2005. As Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer, she provides management for all financial, information services, and internet functions. Carol earned her Masters in Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Andrea joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 2008. With over 20 years of crisis management experience, she serves as Director of Disaster Management Services for Empathia’s Black Swan Solutions. Andrea has responded to numerous mass casualty airline and non-airline incidents, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Additionally, she holds a Masters in Social Work and has over 30 years of human service experience.

Michelle joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 2003. As Director, Business Development, she oversees our sales and marketing efforts. She also manages quality assurance activities and internal Black Swan operations, coordinates and facilitates crisis response services for affected individuals following a traumatic event or disaster, and assists with the development of smart technology to support organizations during a disaster response. Prior to transitioning to the Black Swan Team, Michelle served as an Empathia Account Executive and EAP Counselor. She holds a Masters in Social Work and is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP).

David joined Empathia (then NEAS) in July 1990. He has been directly involved in the development and management of clinical standards, outcomes-based measurement, customer benefit integration processes, and clinical research initiatives. As Director, Privacy and Compliance, he is currently responsible for information privacy and regulatory compliance, as well as providing clinical consultation and disaster response services. David is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 30 years of direct clinical experience and is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP).

Tim joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 1990. As Director, Provider Services, he oversees Empathia’s national affiliate provider network and ensures that the level of service provided exceeds expectations. Additionally, Tim is a former Executive Board Member for the Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA) Chapter of Southern Wisconsin. He holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology, has a certificate in Criminal Justice, and is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP).

Sara joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 2007. As Manager of Clinical Services, she oversees all clinical services, including consultation and supervision, policies and procedures, quality assurance initiatives and service project teams. Additionally, Sara is responsible for direct management of all LifeMatters counselors. She holds a Masters in Education, has a certificate in Criminal Justice, is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), and is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

Chris joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 2000. As Manager, Employer Services, she oversees the Account Management Team, along with the Performance and Consultation Specialists who handle all the company mandated referrals. She also assists in coordinating small and large scale trauma response services. In her previous roles as an EAP Counselor, she provided clinical assessments/counseling, trauma response services, and on-site services. Additionally, she holds a Masters in Social Work, is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), a certified wellness coach, and leads the Online Leader Coaching Team.

She serves as a Culture1st Consultant, assessing and improving culture in the workplace. Her previous roles at Empathia include Provider Relations Development Specialist and EAP Counselor. Alyson was the President of the Greater WI EAPA Chapter until October, 2014, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), as well as a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP). She holds a Masters in Social Work.

Jeremy joined Empathia (then NEAS) in 2007. As Account Manager/Sales Consultant, he manages EAP accounts and works with organizations/brokers interested in partnering with us. His previous role here was as Manager, Client Care Services. Prior to joining Empathia, he spent 14 years in the EAP industry in a variety of managerial and operational roles. Jeremy holds a Masters in Management; he is a certified wellness coach and a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP).

Jessica joined Empathia in 2013. As Account Manager/Trainer, she develops and implements crisis response training to master level behavioral health professionals. She also oversees the functions of the call center during activation, as well as builds and maintains strong, long-lasting customer relationships. In her previous role as an EAP Counselor, she provided clinical assessments/counseling, trauma response services, and on-site services. Jessica has a Masters in Community Counseling and is a national Certified Counselor (NCC).

Shery joined Empathia in 2016. As an Account Representative, she manages national EAP contracts, including contract negotiation, implementation, and administration. She also provides clerical, organizational, and logistical support to the Account Team. Finally, she coordinates, analyzes, and assembles EAP utilization and client demographic reports. She has extensive experience in executive administration and has an Associate Degree in Supervisory Management.

Her previous roles at Empathia include Account Executive, Consultation Specialist, and EAP Counselor. Tammy has a Bachelors in Psychology and is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), as well as a certified wellness coach.

Wendy holds a Masters in Emergency Management; she has an ABCP certification from Disaster Recovery Institute International and is a member in good standing of the Association of Continuity Professionals.

She also helps coordinate and assists with contract implementations and renewals and assists in day-to-day quality assurance initiatives. Additionally, she is a team lead for one of our Disaster Response Call Center subgroups. Her previous role at Empathia was as an Account Representative. Lisa holds a Bachelors degree in Business Administration.

Maypa has an Accounting degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has prior experience in the financial and customer arenas.

Connie joined Empathia in 2014. As Coordinator of Call Center Operations, she oversees telecommunication system technology specific to EAP and Disaster Management call center operations. She is responsible for ensuring the telecommunication systems and call center software are functioning properly, which includes programming & tech support. She also monitors and tracks call center data trends through daily, monthly, quarterly & annual reports. Additionally, she helps support the Disaster Response Call Center as part of the Telecom, Staffing Coordinator and Virtual Call Center Manager teams.

Patti joined Empathia Pacific (then Robert T. Dorris & Associates) in 1997. As Chief Executive Officer for Empathia Pacific, she oversees service delivery systems for quality assurance and manages business operations and compliance with California’s Knox-Keene laws and regulations. As Chief Financial Officer, she oversees all company accounting practices, including preparing budgets, financial reports, tax and audit compliance. She directs financial strategy, planning and forecasts. Additionally, she performs financial and claims oversight and filings in compliance with California’s Knox Keene laws and regulations.

As Clinical Director, she provides concurrent and retrospective reviews of clinical services in compliance with California’s Knox-Keene laws and regulations. Additionally, she provides clinical oversight, consultation, and direction as needed to intake staff for high-risk cases, also in compliance with Knox-Keene. Rhonda is a California Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Independent Social Worker, and Master Addiction Counselor.
